Volvo is a Swedish car manufacturer which was founded in 1927 as a subsidiary of a company called SKF, which produced ball bearings. Though Volvo had produced various models across multiple decades, it was ultimately the Volvo 340, of the 300 series, which became one of the best-selling cars on the market in the 1980s. 1986 proved a record year for the company, as they sold over 113,000 cars in the US. In 1999, the company decided to buy a 5% stake in Mitsubishi, which was succeeded by Ford buying out Volvo the same year. Volvo’s time as part of the Ford group lasted until 2010, with Geely acquiring Volvo from Ford.
Although Volvo is still owned by Geely, they generally operate with their own resources. The company has long been known for its secure and reliable vehicles, which use high-tech systems to ensure safety. This reputation was largely down to the company’s invention of the three-point seatbelt, thanks to engineer Nils Bohlin. The seatbelt then became standard in all Volvo vehicles and in a selfless act from the company, they made the patent for the seatbelt available for other companies to use. Looking back, it was an admirable decision as it has allowed modern cars to be produced with extremely high safety standards.
Volvo was also the first company to introduce side-impact airbags and installed them in every one of their models in 1995. Other safety features in Volvos include the blind spot protection system, which can detect vehicles that enter the driver’s blind spot, triggering a light that alerts the driver to the other vehicle's presence. There were also inflatable side curtains which were introduced in 2005, which would help protect passengers in the event of a side collision or if the vehicle rolled over.
The success of Volvo’s safety systems has helped cement the brand as a big name in the car industry, leading to the range of models which are available today. This range includes the model S60, which is an automatic, mid-sized sports saloon, and with the ability to reach 0-62mph in 6.7s, this vehicle offers a great driving experience. There’s also the Xc40, which is an all-electric estate, making it a great option for those who want an emission-free vehicle. The Xc40 has an impressive spec too, with the ability to reach 0-62mph in 4.9s and can travel around 260 miles on a single charge.
With top safety features and a spacious design, the Xc40 is a great family car. It even features a 31-litre storage space, which is located at the front of the vehicle, rather than the back. This makes it great for family holidays and camping trips, as you can fit all of your gear in the storage trunk and fit the kids in the back seats. To put the icing on the cake, the Xc40 also has a 9” touch screen mounted inside, which can deliver top-quality entertainment for all of the family.
