Citroen is a French car manufacturing company that was founded in 1919 by André Citroën. The company gained a reputation for producing innovative technology with the Traction Avant, which was the first front-wheel car with four-wheel drive to be mass-produced. The company also produced vehicles with modern disc brakes (novel at the time in 1955) and swivelling headlights which improved visibility on the roads.
The Citroen company has a rich history, from producing military vehicles to using the Eiffel tower as a billboard. The marketing decision was made in 1925, to use the Eiffel tower as an advertising sign, which made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest in the world. Fast-forward to 1955, and the first DS model was introduced which utilised Citroën's hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system. Approximately 1.5 million units of this model were produced, proving its popularity, as it was a well-known car of its era, partly due to the name DS, which is pronounced similar to ‘goddess’ (déesse) in France.
After struggling with bankruptcy, Citroen announced its partnership with Peugeot in 1974. This helped with the revival of Citroen, as they went onto produce two popular models which were the GS and CX. The company continued to thrive and in 2009 announced their premium DS brand. The DS3, which is an extremely popular model from the series, won 2010 Car of the Year, as awarded by Top Gear Magazine. The DS4 and DS5 followed, which were released in 2010 and 2015 respectively.
Citroen has also been involved in racing during their time, which includes stints in the Dakar Rally which they won four times, and the Rally Raid Manufacturer's Championship, which they won five times. The company then entered the World Touring Car Championship in 2014 but the factory team left the series in 2017.
After decades of producing popular cars - which have been both affordable and reliable for customers - the company has built a fantastic range of vehicles. This includes the compact C1, mid-sized C3 and the C4. Their range also includes Hybrid and electric vehicles such as the E-C4 and C5 Aircross SUV. These are the latest in a long line of popular models, which included the DS3, however, this was discontinued in 2019. The C1 is now the most similar model in production and offers a modern alternative to the DS3, whilst maintaining the hatchback body type.
